Fight back against the devaluing of nurses’ work
The Canadian Blood Services (CBS) has proposed to eliminate nurses from direct donor screening, replacing them with graduates from an 8 week college course. CBS argues it has to do this to address a nursing shortage. The answer to the nursing shortage is not to eliminate nurses from doing nursing work! (more)

Thanks from CFNU
Linda Silas, president of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU), extended thanks to nurses across the country for their generous support of the Haitian relief effort. The fund was established in January, following the 7.0 magnitude earthquake which left the impoverished island nation in shambles. To date over $71,000 has been raised. The funds were sent to aid the work of Doctors without Borders. NLNU donated $9,700 for Haiti relief. CFNU Thank-you Letter

Ex Gratia Update October 2009

The leadership of the five public sector Unions involved with the Ex Gratia award are taking steps towards arranging the final payout in accordance with the direction of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador. The following outlines the timeline of events:

The initial payment was made on December 15, 2008. The Court directed that a six month deadline from that date had to be established for late claims, which was June 15, 2009. Following the June 15, 2009 deadline, late claims then had to be reviewed and processed.

Once the late claims were processed and the decisions forwarded to the claimants, there was then a two month time frame for late claimants to appeal the decision to the Appellate Officer. This process is still ongoing.

All of this was necessary to ensure compliance with the direction of the Court and to establish the final amount of money remaining in the fund for final payout. We anticipate completing the process and arranging the final payout in the first quarter of 2010.
